ONE Lab Focuses on Energy & Building Sciences

Terreform ONE Launches One Lab for High School Students:

Students can discover the future of design, technology and sustainable fashion, and learn from top leaders in the field of climate science.

New York, NY (March, 2022) __ One Lab Summer Studio returns this June-July 2022, brought to you by one of the most prestigious and innovative research organizations in the field of design, Terreform ONE.  The Summer Studio program comes back in a new and exciting in-person option at the inspiring New Lab center in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, accessible by subway, bus or ferry with the buildout of the new Dock 72.  The novel ecological design program will challenge and prepare young minds for the future. ONE LabSummer Studio offers classes in environmental architecture, bio design, future cities, and sustainable fashion offered over three two-week sessions from June to the end of July 2021. ONE Lab will give students unprecedented access to the collective brainpower of global innovators, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, artists and experts from the fields of architecture, engineering, ecology and design. These industry leaders will share thought-provoking ideas and projects with students and help them to create compelling portfolios for college.

With a focus on environment, design, architecture and climate science, students will use New York City as a laboratory to design the city of tomorrow. Their investigations will be based on one illuminating hypothesis: in the future, buildings and design will come to be self-sufficient in their critical necessities. The production of energy, alimentation, and objects are key elements to establish the basic necessities to create self-sufficient habitats. The award-winning faculty is comprised of a diverse group of global innovators, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, artists, and industry experts who will explore how design is adapting to address these changes. Students will attend online lectures and Q&As, remote tours and then do hands-on, at-home studio work under faculty guidance.

ONE Lab was created by Terreform ONE co-founders Maria Aiolova and Dr. Mitch Joachim, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Practice at NYU. Mitch is an award-winning designer and global influencer who was named by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 People Changing America.” This Fulbright Scholar and TED Senior Fellow has a global perspective on the impact of design on human extinction. Maria is an educator, designer, and community builder who focuses on ecological design, smart cities, and sustainable urban infrastructure. Maria is also an inventor, who holds 18 technology patents, and was awarded “Woman of the Decade in Science and Design Leadership” at the Women Economic Forum 2020 in Cairo, Egypt.

ONE Lab Director Julie Bleha has a long and varied career in education, the arts and non-profit management. She helped launch The School of The New York Times’ pre-college program, and has taught in pre-college programs at Barnard College, among others. She notes “this program will give students access to some of the greatest minds in design, and will challenge them and expose them to new ideas career paths they didn’t even know existed. It’s a unique opportunity for them to explore what’s plausible for the world they will inhabit and can even help create, and to join a community of activists and change-makers in these exciting new fields while they prepare for life in college and beyond.”

The instructors include Dr. Nina Anker, award-winning sustainable design architect, Eran Chen, Founding Principal and CEO of ODA Architecture; Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky, multimedia artist and climate activist; Dr. Oliver Medvedik, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at The Cooper Union; and Dr. Amanda Parks, Chief Innovation Officer at Pangaia, a material science fashion company.  The full list of educators can be found here.
